Yerington is the county seat for Lyon County which houses all the county governmental agencies i.e. District Court, District Attorney, Assessor, Recorder and County Clerk/Treasurer along with the Yerington City Hall offices.
The valley is rich and lush with green fields of alfalfa; onions, garlic and lettuce just to mention a few of the crops grown in the area. Wine grapes are also being introduced in the valley with success. Years ago it was home to the Anaconda Copper Mine which has since closed. New mines are currently in various stages of intensive core drilling and preparation for opening soon.
Yerington is home to the Yerington School system k-12, Western Nevada College, South Lyon Medical Center, the Yerington Senior Citizens Center, Jeanne Dini Center, Mason Valley Boys and Girls Club, Mason Valley Swimming Pool, Mason Valley Fish Hatchery, Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area and several municipal parks, baseball/softball parks, soccer fields and a tennis court.
"Main Street" of Yerington reminds you of Main Street USA. Everyone seems to know each other and if they don't they still greet you with a hello or good afternoon. People in Yerington are always ready to lend a helping hand.
There are many opportunities for recreation such as fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, dirt bike riding, and boating along with many cultural activities. Within driving distance are several lakes which offer a multitude of activities, Lake Tahoe, Topaz Lake and Lahontan Reservoir.
Mason Valley is known for a defined difference in seasons. Spring is delightful with the birth of new growth. Summer brings warmer days and cool nights. Fall shows us many exciting colors and warns of the coming winter. Winter is chilly with measurable snowfall, though sometimes short in duration. No matter what time of year, the valley has a way of showing its magnificent beauty. Mason Valley has an elevation of 4,380 feet above sea level and is locally noted as being the "banana belt" of the area with an average of over 300 days of sunshine.
Reno is approximately 86 miles to the northeast and Carson City approximately 60 miles to the east .
